We thought we'd share our 5 top tips on how to make the most out of your face-to-face connections when attending a jobs fair.
Walking into a space full of exhibition stands can be a daunting prospect, and you might feel that you are not sure how to start conversations. Whether you are new to job fairs/recruitment events or just out of practice, these tips should make you feel more prepared and, therefore more comfortable when approaching companies.
1. Do your research before the event
Make sure that you look at the websites of the companies that will be exhibiting, and pinpoint those that you would like to speak with. This will make it easier for you to navigate the room once you get to the event and will give you a point to start from. Check out their careers pages and have a few roles in mind so that you will be able to ask deeper questions when chatting to company representatives.
2. Create a good first impression
Get yourself organised with some printed CV’s and not much else. Keep your hands free for handshakes and introductions, without having to juggle an arm full of coats, bags etc. Most well-organised events will have an area for you to leave coats so that you can interact clutter free!
3. Dress code
We often get asked what the dress code is when attending our Cambridge Network recruitment events. Smart obviously makes a good first impression, although you should also feel relaxed too. Lots of tech company representatives for example tend to favour the jeans and hoodie look, so smart casual is usually the best happy medium. Look on the company's LinkedIn pages and at some of their team photos, to get an idea of the general dress codes and cultures of the exhibiting companies.
4. Speak to everyone!
Don’t be put off if a company appears to be targeting a specific type of job seeker. Make sure you chat with all the stand holders. Some companies may be focussing on one type of role but could have others that may be suitable for you that are not immediately obvious. Networking when job seeking is essential, one conversation can open many doors.
5. Follow up
If you've had a good conversation with an employer and you have their name, connect with them on LinkedIn and thank them for their help or drop them an email. Sign up for the weekly Cambridge Network jobs letter, to receive weekly job alerts and future events details.
