The first line manager role is unique in organisations, as this person is the only level who manages non-managers. This brings its own set of hurdles to overcome, and for people new to managing others there is a lot to learn.

This course is aimed at those new to management, those with some experience as a manager, or those who may be promoted in the next few months.

Overall, being a new manager can be tough. This course provides a practical toolkit of best practice do’s and don’ts to help new managers avoid mistakes and feel more equipped to cope in their first management role.

  • To adjust your mindset from individual contributor to manager
  • How to manage workloads and deadlines
  • Understand the changes in workplace relationships
  • Deal with the early stages of people issues and conflict
  • Develop your team through good communication and teamwork
  • Identify opportunities for delegation
  • Deliver 1-2-1 reviews and provide developmental feedback
  • Identify a ‘tool-kit’ of techniques and skills

  • Team leaders, supervisors, and project managers with up to one years’ experience in their new role, or those with more experience who feel that learning some management fundamentals would help
  • High potentials who are looking to be promoted in the next 6 months
  • Technical and project leads who would like to upskill their management techniques

Programme Overview

1. The Early Days

The move from individual contributor or team member to manager requires a complete rethink and approach to the ‘day job’. You are no longer responsible just for your own output, but also for that of your team, possibly further complicated by them not even working on your projects. This part of the programme will help you take stock of where you are now, what you need to start doing, and what you may need to stop doing.
Topics include:

  • What makes an effective manager
  • The behavioural shifts required
  • Challenges to anticipate
  • Time management and prioritisation

2. The People Dimension

A vital part of the manager role is to be an excellent communicator at all levels, potentially with people very different to yourself.  Here we will look at how to influence and motivate the people that you work with to help build strong and productive working relationships and to break down barriers.
Topics include:

  • Understanding how communication works and how it can get confused
  • How different behavioural preferences can be overcome so that people work together more effectively 
  • What is motivation and how to use it
  • The importance of having real SMART objectives

3. The High Performing Team

Successful teams don’t happen by accident, they need to be established, built, and then maintained. We will now build on what we learnt in the People Dimension part of the programme to see how to get the most out of our teams, which is vital for productivity and a healthy working environment.
Topics include:

  • How teams form and the challenges for the manager when building an effective team
  • Making the most of team meetings
  • The challenges of hybrid working
  • How to approach delegation

4. Developing Others

One of the most important responsibilities of a manager is to the individuals that you line manage. It is your job to help them keep on track professionally, develop their careers, and to identify any problems. It isn’t always easy being honest with people, but they do need to understand their reality. This is probably the biggest challenge of management and one that many managers avoid to the detriment of their people.
Topics include:

  • How to build trust
  • Making the most of 1-2-1 meetings
  • Giving constructive feedback
  • How to have performance conversations

The course concludes with action planning and creating next steps to ensure that the knowledge gained from the course creates real behaviour change in the workplace. Each group will become their own peer network to support each other after course completion. 

Very interesting course and I am very pleased with the trainer. The course was very engaging and there was a good balance of theory and brainstorming ideas. I liked the case studies and the time dedicated to discussing "real life" issues and scenarios. Overall I am very pleased with the course and I would recommend it.

This course was really insightful - I particularly appreciated all the effort that Debby put into creating a safe and friendly environment for everyone. The course was also a balanced mix of theory with practice, with plenty of opportunities to discuss and train real live situations. The size of the class was also really perfect - anything bigger would seem more intimidating. Thank you for a great programme and coach!
