FEP Application Scientist

This is an exciting opportunity for a computational chemist to join a growing team of Application Scientists. A customer facing position, you will provide scientific support related to the application of Free Energy Perturbation (FEP) and simulation methods to new and existing customers. You will also contribute to the scientific development of these methods working in close contact with the Cresset software science and development teams. Application Scientists are central to our business. Working closely with our customers, they understand the current problems in small molecule discovery across industries including pharmaceutical, agrochemical and flavor. They discuss and demonstrate how Cresset applications can be used to solve issues and gather feedback on scientific and technical improvements that we could implement. Working with our team of developers they help to validate and apply cutting edge scientific methods. Working with the commercial team our Application Scientists communicate these cutting-edge methods to customers, detailing their benefits and limitations in an honest and open manner.


Key Responsibilities

  • To support our software and drug discovery customers in the use and application of Cresset free energy methods and solve current problems in drug discovery, agrochemical discovery and related fields.
  • Work through multiple channels – email, phone, video meetings, chat and in-person visits – to provide the first line of support for all Cresset’s free energy methods customers.
  • Actively contribute to the scientific development and testing of free energy methods at Cresset.
  • Prepare case studies and examples that demonstrate how Cresset free energy methods can be applied to relevant problems in new molecule discovery.
  • Work with Cresset’s dedicated global sales team to demonstrate Cresset free energy methods to prospective customers and support all global software evaluations.
  • Work with Cresset’s product managers to prepare and deliver training to our extensive range of clients.
  • Gather and feedback on competitive intelligence gained from third parties.
  • Provide feedback to development on new features and functionality required in the Cresset software applications, with a particular focus on free energy methods.
  • Represent Cresset and attend conferences, seminars and exhibitions.
  • Maintain market knowledge to assist with customer communication.



  • PhD in relevant scientific discipline – Chemistry is preferred
  • Experienced in the application and/or development of free energy methods


Contract Length

  • 12 months 



Cambridge, UK (office-based for a minimum of 2 days a week, flexible remote working 3 days a week)
