We are looking for an Associate Principal Scientist to join our Biologics Engineering (BE) team based. In this role, you will be responsible for providing critical antibody/protein engineering expertise to support the delivery of our next-generation biotherapeutics portfolio in the Oncology therapeutic area, focusing on Tumour Targeted Delivery. This is a multi-facet role involving independent scientific research and participating and leading projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team. You will also contribute to identifying and developing ground-breaking technologies that benefit biologics drug discovery and have a consistent track record of creatively solving scientific challenges.

BUSINESS AREA
BE is responsible for discovering and optimizing biological candidate drugs across all AZ therapy areas such as oncology, respiratory and inflammation, cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic diseases.
What you’ll do
Develop Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADCs), RadioImmuno Conjugates (RICs), and other therapeutic antibodies or proteins for multiple drug discovery or technology development projects simultaneously, delivering work on time and within budget
Identify and lead the development of innovative solutions to engineer and characterize ADCs/RICs and novel formats thereof, and other antibody/protein-based therapeutics
Maintain a well-developed understanding of approaches to biologics drug discovery and applies a broader functional knowledge to support the department
Lead and provide input to peer-reviewed publications, patents and participate in international conferences
Provide technical training and supervise members of the team where required
Ensures own work and work of peers follows Good Laboratory Practice, Safety, Health, and Environment standards and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations
Essential for the role
Ph.D. with proven experience or BSc/higher degree with extensive lab-based experience
A deep level of knowledge and hands-on experience in antibody/protein engineering
Strong technical skills in molecular biology, cell culture, protein expression and purification, and biophysical characterization
Good knowledge and experience with in-vitro pharmacology assays
A history of successful project delivery and publications, and patents
Excellent communication, capable of developing good working relationships with individuals across organizational boundaries, and experience working within a team environment
Desirable for the role
Strong project management/leadership skills
Previous experience in ADCs/RICs design and development
Experience in bioconjugation
