We are seeking an experienced data and AI professional to support the delivery of AstraZeneca’s ambition of putting AI at the heart of 80% of our business processes by 2025. You will be at the heart of how we drive adoption of AI across our company, develop new frameworks for how we develop and use AI across AZIT as well as optimise our processes and tooling. This individual will work collaboratively across our team, with the wider AI communities and across AZIT to develop and implement our AI strategy, delivering value to the organisation and help achieve our goal of democratisting AI.

We are looking for someone with the relevant experience to bring this up-to-date with anyone delivers AI projects responsibly and ethically. Driving the enterprise introduction and adoption of new AI delivery frameworks and tooling will require you to balance technical skills with great communication and program management abilities.

The ideal candidate will have relevant experience working with data and AI. You will understand and have developed Data and AI use cases from ideation, to proof-of-concept to production. You will need to have had exposure to handling regulatory and compliance challenges (eg GXP, GMP, SOX). You will have had personal experience in pharmaceutical business processes maturity assessment and be excited about developing new frameworks for large organisations.

You will also have responsibility to help increase the efficiency of our Data and AI teams as well as simplify that of the wider Data and AI community. This will include helping to introduce & drive the adoption of modern AI tooling (such as code repositories, model registries, pipeline libraries, CI/CD approaches, algorithm documentation) at enterprise scale. Our team helps enable scientists and data scientists all the way from early research & clinical development, to manufacturing and commercial sales, to work on the hardest machine learning problems.

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for driving the efficiency and enhancing the performance of Data and AI activities across AZ. You will help establish metrics and performance goals as well as the necessary tools and processes to make things work with the minimal level of bureaucracy

  • Assist with the development of our Agile Delivery Framework For Data and AI – working across our Data amd AI community to collaborate to update how we embed Data and AI into our IT processes

  • Accountable for our global metrics in measuring our ambition of embedding AI in 80% of our essential business processes by 2025.

  • Working across the key AI leaders in AZIT functions to ensure our central Data and AI catalogue is populated and kept up-to-date as an invaluable resource to drive reusability across AstraZeneca. In addition, develop simple methods for consistently capturing the tangible and intangible value & ROI across projects that leverage advanced analytics and Ai.

  • Be responsible for the success of the adoption of modern developer tooling within our data science and AI area

  • Design support and service models for our Data and AI tooling and work with the wider IT community on delivery of these

  • Collaborate with machine learning engineers and IT professionals on defining the requirements and processes for delivering GxP validated Data and AI solutions

  • Liaise with other teams to enhance our technological stack, to enable the adoption of the latest advances in data pipelines and AI.

  • Support the strategic planning of the team by providing leadership as well as mentor and support across multiple projects.

Candidate Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, Statistics or related subjects

  • Experience working across pharmaceutical business problems with data or AI related background.

  • Experience and technical skills in one or more of the following areas: classical machine learning, recommendation systems, natural language processing or computer vision.

  • Experience in handling regulatory or compliance data is key (GMP, GXP, SOX).

  • Strong business framework and mapping experience, with applied insight.

  • Software development skills including topics like CI/CD, testing, branching strategies

  • Lead data science projects from ideation through proof-of-concepts to productionisation. Understanding the challenges and experience of nurturing and incubating AI projects.

  • Good understanding of enterprise IT, including security, privacy, architecture, quality management, testing etc.

  • Experience running technology projects, including engagement with technical and non-technical partners

  • Ability to work with loosely defined objectives and turning these into requirements and business cases for enterprise investment

  • Creative, collaborative, & product focused.

  • Strong passion to increase the ease of access of Data Science, Machine Learning and AI tools to AI experts and beginners across a large company.

  • Strong bias for action and results.
