We are building our digital service innovation team and are looking for candidates with the experience and skills to help our clients bring innovative digital services to market. The roles we are looking for are:

  • Senior Digital Service Strategist with a focus on the commercial context and business models associated with digital products and services
  • Senior Digital Service Designer with a focus on the innovation, ideation and design of digital products and services
  • Senior Product Owner for Digital Services with a focus on managing digital products and services through development to go-live

We are looking for candidates with demonstrable experience in one of these roles, ideally combined with an ability in at least one of the others. This is because in some projects you will need to be flexible across these roles. These are senior roles and you will be working closely with other teams of specialists around the business.

The role of Digital Product Owner acts as a vital bridge between client ambition, user insight and the art-of-the-possible. This is a role that demands deep client empathy, careful facilitation of specialist skills and pragmatic trade-offs between multiple conflicting needs in order to allow the team to discover, design and deliver the best possible successful outcome.

All of this is within exciting and fast-moving technologies where your ideas will push the limits of what has been done before. We expect you to keep well informed of new digital technologies and development techniques.

You must be inquisitive – to ask ‘why?’ and ‘how?’ To think about the experience and user needs, and understand why one approach will probably work better than another.

As an experienced service owner, you will be able to:

  • Work with clients to refine ambitions and communicate how our team can help them
  • Understand the business drivers and commercial context of our clients’ ambitions
  • Form the vision for the service and engage developers and other stakeholders in the delivery of that vision over time
  • Take full responsibility for shaping a service end-to-end and communicate with stakeholders throughout the process
  • Help clients to overcome obstacles and take operational ownership for services as they go live and become evolving in-service products
  • Represent users throughout the delivery process and use their feedback to inform continuous improvement

The services we design are sometimes purely digital and sometimes have a physical element, making this a unique opportunity to do both.

This is an opportunity to work with a range of clients – the big and the small; from established multi-national to ambitious start-ups. Clients are disrupting different market sectors such as consumer, industrial and medical. Some have existing products and are looking for new ways to deliver their offering, and some have a new product, a new idea or working service. They might have a limited understanding of the digital part and may need to solve a technological problem or be shown how to scale.

At Cambridge Consultants you will have a like-minded technology, engineering and science organisation behind you. People brimming with ideas and a hunger to solve problems. You need to know digital technologies, when a decentralised approach might be right,  to know your clouds … and when to use the edge. You will understand the trends – for example digital twins or Artificial Intelligence of Things, or the potential of 5G private networking – and you know what the market is like; these might be outdated by the time you are reading this. You have to keep moving with the technology trends.

Specific responsibilities

Working with clients:

  • Lead the delivery of digital product and service projects in a senior client-facing role
  • Travel to client sites for workshops, meetings and presentations (subject to Covid-19 restrictions); however most of your time will be spent working with the Cambridge Consultants team rather than at clients’ sites

Supporting sales:

  • Take a lead role alongside business developers in defining projects with potential clients and generating proposals
  • Take responsibility for on-going account development in collaboration with the wider Cambridge Consultants’ commercial team

Develop Cambridge Consultants’ capability:

  • Work closely with business developers around the business to help them understand and identify digital service development opportunities
  • Develop propositions and appropriate collateral to expand our offerings to the market
  • Maintain an understanding of and capability in the latest approaches in digital service design and development
  • Mentor others in the team to sustain a strong, collaborative working environment

Essential requirements

  • Significant experience delivering truly-innovative digital service projects, ideally in a consulting business
  • Significant experience acting as a vital bridge between client ambition, user insight and the art-of-the-possible
  • Experienced at operating as the service owner in an Agile delivery team, making trade-offs between commercial pressures and technical feasibility
  • Knowledgeable about the latest digital technologies and credible at a technical level, with the ability to work closely with experts across domains to deliver a complete solution
  • Comfortable engaging with clients at the pre-sales stage to define a project to meet their needs
  • Good communicator in both written and spoken form, credible with the most senior executives and less experienced stakeholders alike; with those who are technically fluent and those with limited technical understanding

Desirable experience 

  • Demonstrable experience engaging with clients across strategic, innovative and development dimensions
  • Experience in a consultancy, working with a broad range of clients and across sectors
  • Experience of leading the sales process for new clients
  • Experience across the full breadth of tools and approaches used in digital service design with relevant training and qualifications
  • A strong academic background and a degree in a relevant subject
