Job Summary

Echion is seeking a talented Senior Scientist to join our research & development team working on the innovation and development of new battery materials, leading to scale-up and commercialisation. We are ideally looking to appoint a Senior Scientist with a strong background in new battery materials discovery and understanding and applying new battery materials in electrochemical cells. Experience of working in an industrial R&D setting would be seen as being particularly advantageous. You will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the technical and operational direction of the company as we move to rapidly expand. You will be actively involved in discovery, synthesis, characterisation and electrochemical testing of a range of battery materials, and in contributing to improvements to Echion’s laboratory and processes.

The ideal candidate will have an innovative approach and a scientific background, with practical laboratory experience in physical sciences research and development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate our laboratory research facilities to produce, characterise and electrochemically test new battery materials (including equipment, SOP’s, H&S).
  • Propose innovative solutions, lead, and implement studies on new active materials, formulations, concepts, processes and understanding of limiting mechanisms through in-depth physicochemical and electrochemical evaluation and advanced characterisation techniques (innovation, research & new product development).
  • Plan experiments, analyse data and summarise results, with the rest of the R&D team.
  • Work with the CTO and R&D Programme Manager to innovate and optimise material design and quality to meet challenging battery performance targets.
  • Continuously improve the materials lab setup, materials production, and material characterisation process.
  • Implement recommendations from customers and the commercial team.
  • Take an active role in patents and literature surveys/reviews, keeping up to date with the state-of-the-art.
  • Take an active role in quality control development and technical support.
  • Work cross-functionally to enable the innovation, scale up and commercialisation of Echion’s products.

Education & Qualifications required

Master's degree in a relevant field e.g., Chemistry, Materials Science, and 5 years postgraduate research experience (in academia or industry)

or PhD in a relevant field with at least 2 years post PhD research experience

or similar level of experience working in a chemical / materials research laboratory environment

Experience required

  • Experienced with inorganic materials synthesis techniques.
  • Experience of solid-state characterisation methods e.g., PXRD, SEM, XPS.
  • Experience of battery materials synthesis and characterisation would be advantageous.
  • Experience of lab scale cell manufacture and electrochemical testing of battery materials would be beneficial.

Skills & knowledge required

  • Ability to measure, record and analyse detailed scientific data.
  • Ability to plan and execute research projects in a timely manner within a fast-paced working environment.
  • Ability to present results to relevant stakeholders as oral presentations and written reports.
  • Ability to mentor and train others
  • Knowledge of battery electrochemistry including degradation mechanisms, interfacial reactions, component choice and cell design would be beneficial.
  • An awareness of the global battery materials industry.
