Introduction to role:

Join our Biologics Engineering team at the Discovery Centre, Biomedical Campus, Cambridge UK for a fixed term of 1 year. We are seeking a laboratory-based scientist to join our Protein and Cell Sciences team in the department of Biologics Engineering.

As a Senior Scientist, you will provide technical expertise in molecular biology, protein expression (in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic expression systems), protein purification and characterisation. Primary responsibilities will be to produce target proteins (antigens) in support of our Biologics Discovery Portfolio. This will also involve developing techniques and assays to monitor functionality of the recombinant proteins.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide scientific and technical skills in the area of recombinant target protein production (‘antigens’) to support early and late-stage therapeutic programs.

  • Applies expertise in producing recombinant expression vectors using standard molecular biology techniques and using these to produce and purify recombinant proteins from bacterial and transient mammalian expression systems (e.g. E.coli, HEK, CHO host cells).

  • Applies scientific expertise to build robust methods for protein production including development of standard operating procedures.

  • Develop methods to assay for recombinant protein functionality and integrity.

  • Makes detailed observations, analyses data, interprets results and maintains laboratory electronic notebooks and databases.

  • Reporting and presentation of results to project teams and department.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • BSc/higher degree with lab-based experience

  • Already gained experience and technical skills in molecular biology, cell culture, transient protein expression and protein purification.

  • Proven track record of developing and deploying assays to monitor/assess protein function and quality (e.g. ELISA, Cell based reporter assays) in a laboratory environment.

  • Excellent communication, capable of developing good working relationships with individuals in team; experience working within a team environment.

  • Ability to maintain accurate experimental records, databases and use/develop standard operating protocols.

  • Prior experience in troubleshooting experimental processes relating to protein expression, purification and quality in a laboratory environment.

Desirable Skills:

•             Application of automation to laboratory processes in areas of molecular biology and protein expression
