Painting marks the Marshall Group of Companies centenary celebrations

Marshall of Cambridge held an Open Day for its Company employees and their families and friends almost exactly a year ago (20th September 2009) and invited members of the East Anglian Branch of the Guild of Aviation Artists to sketch during the course of the day.

Resulting from this, a dramatic montage of some of the activities on the day was produced as a watercolour painting by David Smith, an Associate of the Guild of Aviation Artists, and this painting was handed over on permanent loan to Marshall of Cambridge by David Smith last week.

Artist David Smith said:  “It was a great privilege to be able to share the exciting events of Marshall’s special Centenary Day, which inspired me to paint this watercolour.”

Sir Michael Marshall said:  “We are very pleased to have this wonderful painting on permanent loan with the Marshall Group of Companies, which provides a very tangible reminder of a very happy day for our employees, their families and friends.”

David Smith is essentially a self-taught artist who worked for 38 years for BEA – later becoming British Airways – before his retirement in 2001.  In 1999 he attended his first formal art course and has exhibited for the last four years at the Guild of Aviation Artists Annual Exhibition in the Mall Galleries.  He was appointed an Associate of the Guild of Aviation Artists earlier this year and in his retirement is now a full time artist.

In exchange for the permanent loan of the painting, Marshall of Cambridge has made a donation on behalf of the artist to  “Help for Heroes”.
