Cambridge accountants go wild for charity

Over 80 employees from Ernst & Young’s Cambridge office have swapped their tools of the trade for wellies, spades and trowels to take part in a range of community projects across the city.

The office charity challenge forms part of Ernst & Young’s ongoing corporate responsibility programme and a three week initiative in which 3,500 employees nationwide will be taking a day out of their busy schedules to participate in a range of charitable projects.

Collectively, the Cambridge office donated the equivalent of 360 hours of volunteer work in this latest community initiative, donning their overalls to tackle overgrown hedges and unruly weeds at Milton Country Park, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (EACH), Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Darwin Nurseries, and the grounds of a local Camsite centre.

Speaking about the firm’s ongoing commitment to corporate responsibility, senior partner Julian Jenkins said: “To have over 80 people from the Cambridge office volunteering their time to take part in this project highlights the level of commitment and support for community initiatives from our employees.”

Continuing he said: “Over the next three weeks, over 3,500 of the firm’s UK employees will be contributing to a broad range of projects, making a real difference to their local communities. In total, this will amount to over 26,250 hours of volunteer work.”

Anne Streather, the chief executive of Cam Sight said: “It has been a real a real pleasure to spend time with the volunteers, and we hope very much that there will be further opportunities for Ernst and Young and Cam Sight to come together in the future.”

Mr Jenkins concluded: “The firm’s corporate responsibility programme allows our employees to spend two days per year to take part in charitable projects. In fact many of the community activities organised over the next three weeks are an extension of established volunteer schemes which run throughout the year.”
