Cambridge business leader in running for Entrepreneur Of The Year Award.

One of Cambridge’s leading business professionals has been short-listed for the south region final of Ernst & Young’s prestigious Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards (EOY).

Dr Jonathan Milner, founder and chief executive of Abcam Plc, will be competing against 52 business men and women from across the South of England for the title of ‘South Region Entrepreneur Of The Year’.

Winners will be announced at an awards banquet on 19th June at the Hilton London Metropole Hotel, before going on to compete in a UK final later this year.

Abcam Plc, a fast-growth listed biotechnology company based in the Cambridge Science Park, develops, markets and sells antibodies and closely related products through its website. The firm has customers in 60 countries and employs over 70 staff at both its UK headquarters and its office in Cambridge Massachusetts.

Cathy Taylor, Ernst & Young partner in Cambridge said: “Cambridge has a thriving and dynamic business community and it is encouraging to see that the cream of the region’s entrepreneurial talent will be represented at this year’s Entrepreneur Of The Year awards.”

The EOY awards programme has been running for ten years in the UK, and has recognised the achievements of some of Cambridge’s top talent. Angus Thirlwell and Peter Harris, the co-founders of Hotel Choclolat Ltd, scooped the overall Entrepreneur Of The Year award in 2007. They were joined on the podium by Richard Longdon of AVEVA Group Plc, won the South Region Entrepreneur Of The Year award in the ‘Quoted’ category.

Peter Harris of Hotel Chocolat will sit on this year’s independent judging panel for the EOY awards programme. Other judges include: Terry Burt of 2e2, Chris Harrison of Leaders' Quest, Clive Beharrell formerly of Fat Face, Tom Black of Detica and Jamie Pike, formerly of Foseco International Ltd.

Mrs Taylor added: “Entrepreneurs are the life blood of the Cambridge and wider UK economy and so it is vitally important that programmes like EOY continue to recognise their achievements and the contributions they make.”

Concluding he said: “The calibre of this year’s finalists is truly outstanding and so there can be no doubt that the competition will be fiercer than ever.”
