Royston businesses vote “yes” in business improvement district ballot

North Hertfordshire District Council has announced the result of the Royston First Business Improvement District (BID) ballot, where a majority of positive votes were cast.

Turnout (of 454 ballot papers issued)
Positive votes by number
Positive votes by rateable value

The positive result will be discussed further at the forthcoming Royston Town Centre Forum (15 December) and Royston Town Council (22 December) meetings.

Commenting on the result, John Gourd of sponsors Johnson Matthey Plc and the Chairman of the Steering Group, said; “This is a fantastic result for Royston and represents a very positive step forward. Our extensive consultation obviously helped us create a Prospectus that struck a real chord with our local businesses. A “Yes” vote, even in the face of an adverse economic climate, is an endorsement, from the businesses, of the direction that Royston First has chosen to take.

"The next four months will be busy whilst the structure of the BID company is formalised. This will include establishing the company and electing Board members to direct Royston First from April 2009, then translating the business plan into actions to make a real difference to the town. Keep watching our website: for progress updates and the countdown to launching our activities.

"I should personally like to thank all those businesses that demonstrated their commitment to the BID, and to Royston, by registering their “yes” votes. I would also like to record my thanks to the Steering Group and all those who have put so much hard work into this project.”
