The ACT teams on the other side of the Atlantic, led by friends of Simon, were inspired to support his efforts having seen his unfailing dedication to the cause. One team braved an early start, snow and minus 15 degree temperatures to run a half marathon in another Cambridge in Ontario, Canada, and a little later in the day, in more temperate conditions, a third team ran along the Monterey coast in California.
Back in the UK, ACT team member Rebecca White, won the Boundary Run marathon for the women in a time of 3 hours and 35 minutes. Her team-mate and husband Nick White, came fourth for the men in a time of 3 hours and 2 minutes. All ACT team runners, including Simon, completed the course, which attracted hundreds of runners.
Simon, 48, lives in Bury St Edmunds and works for Cambridge University Press (CUP) as the Global Digital and Commercial Director, Education. Simon has recently been treated for bladder and urothelial cancers at Addenbrooke’s.
He said: “I would like to pass on my most sincere thanks and admiration to all the runners taking part, the run organisers and all the families, friends and supporters who contributed so much to such a successful set of runs and fundraising. A good chunk of the run is around the boundaries of Addenbrooke’s Hospital. What really hit home during my run was the huge difference these funds will make to the patients and dedicated teams at the hospital.”
Jo Pearson, Community Fundraising Manager at ACT said: “We are absolutely delighted with the fantastic achievements of Simon and the ACT teams. Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the runs and all the wonderful supporters. The money raised will help make a difference for cancer patients like Simon at Addenbrooke’s.”
The site for donations is still open and can be found at www.justgiving.com/actnowrun. All contributions will be gratefully received.
