Anglia Ruskin brothers are boxing clever

Anglia Ruskin University students and brothers Nour and Mohammed Metowlli achieved boxing success last weekend, winning gold and silver medals respectively at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) National Championships, where Anglia Ruskin’s men’s judo team also won gold.

Accounting and Finance student Nour, 19, defeated fighters from Leeds and Sheffield on his way to the final of his 64-69kg category on Friday night at the Ponds Forge International Centre, Sheffield, before beating Durham’s Milambo Makani to win the gold medal.

His brother Mohammed, 20, who studies Business Management, also won through to the final in his 69-75kg event, but was defeated by Coventry’s Moatasem Akubaker and took home a silver medal.

Anglia Ruskin’s men’s judo team, made up of Mateja Glusac (pictured), Adam Adaman, Lee Carder, Josip Sancic and Jason Bull, was also successful, winning gold at All Saints school, while the women’s team came home with a bronze. Mateja Glusac also won his individual event in the under-90kg category, while Tara Fitzjohn, Josip Sancic and Lee Carder won individual bronze medals, bringing the medal total to eight.

Computer Science student Mateja, 22, said: “This event has been a focus of ours for many months so to fight for Anglia Ruskin for the second year and to bring home the gold for the second year feels great.”

Anglia Ruskin was also represented by students in the swimming, badminton and athletics events, and even Ruskin the Rhino got in on the act, competing in a mascot race.

Martin Beaver, Head of Sport and Active Anglia, said: “We had a great weekend in Sheffield and all students who competed represented Anglia Ruskin superbly. I’m absolutely delighted with our medal tally and very proud of all our students.”
