A total of 360 universities from 62 countries took part in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, which primarily compares efforts to make campuses sustainable and takes into account the emphasis placed on sustainability in teaching and research.
Anglia Ruskin is now ranked 51st out of 360, an improvement from 118th out of 301 in 2013. Universities take part from across the world, including the United States, South America, Asia and Africa.
Anglia Ruskin’s significant improvement is down to improvements including a simplified recycling scheme and a wormery for catering waste; installing LED lighting; installing automatic thermostatic radiator valves in several buildings to control heating and replacing air-conditioning units with new cool-phase technology.
Simon Chubb, Environmental Manager for Anglia Ruskin University, said: “We are constantly assessing where in our buildings we can make changes to reduce our carbon footprint. Many of the concepts which have resulted in our improvement have saved costs as well.
“We try and educate our students on the importance of the environment whenever possible and our Global Sustainability Institute is a world-renowned research institute attempting to influence policy makers worldwide.”
