Anglia Ruskin sticks together with hockey stars

National league stars of the future could be nurtured in Cambridge thanks to a partnership between one of the city’s hockey clubs and Anglia Ruskin University.

The link-up will provide opportunities for talented student hockey players to access top facilities and coaching provided by Cambridge City Hockey Club (CCHC), with scholarship options from Anglia Ruskin on the table for outstanding individuals.

In turn, CCHC’s men’s, women’s and under 16’s teams’ shirts will be sponsored by Anglia Ruskin for the remainder of the 2014/15 season and the club will enjoy access to highly-rated student players.

CCHC will offer club membership to all Anglia Ruskin University Hockey Club players and provide two qualified coaches to oversee taster sessions and trials at the start of each academic year.

The parties are working in collaboration to offer a number of hockey scholarships on a yearly basis, with successful applicants going on to receive up to £1,000 of support per year for up to three years from Anglia Ruskin, free club membership from CCHC and a host of other benefits including access to coaching and umpire qualifications, scholar seminars and workshops.

Martin Beaver, Head of Sport and Active Anglia (pictured second left), said: “This partnership is great news for any aspiring hockey stars who want to benefit from a university education while continuing to hone their skills.  We are proud to be linking up with Cambridge City and wish them all the best for the rest of the season.”

Andy Richardson, chairman of CCHC (pictured third left) said: “We at Cambridge City are incredibly pleased to have made the link with Anglia Ruskin.  It will encourage elite players to attend university and play high-level hockey for the club, at the same time allowing all Anglia Ruskin players to become part of Cambridge City and access good quality coaching.

“We know that this in turn will enable Anglia Ruskin to become very competitive within the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues.  We are very much looking forward to working with Anglia Ruskin over the coming season and beyond to provide enjoyable hockey for all.”
