Anglia Ruskin University will host three high-profile natural history TV presenters this autumn, with Professor Alice Roberts, Saba Douglas-Hamilton and Gordon Buchanan visiting the Cambridge campus.
Highly-acclaimed BBC wildlife cameraman and presenter Gordon Buchanan will appear on Saturday, 14 October (4-6pm) to talk about his career and his incredible wildlife encounters, as well as answer questions from the audience.
The event, Animal Families and Me, will be an opportunity to hear personal recollections of Gordon’s globetrotting travels, as he delves into some weird, wild and wonderful wildlife – all illustrated with his own film footage and photography.
Professor Alice Roberts, who has presented a number of TV series including The Incredible Human Journey, Origins of Us, Ice Age Giants, The Celts, Coast and Horizon, will be talking about Tamed, on Thursday, 19 October (7.30-9.30pm).
Tamed is her new book which asks ‘how do you tame wildness?’ For hundreds of thousands of years our ancestors depended on wild plants and animals. They were hunter-gatherers – consummate survival experts, but taking the world as they found it. Then a revolution happened: we started to domesticate wild species. The human population boomed, and civilization took off.
Through archaeology, history and genetics, Alice will reveal the amazing stories of the species that became our allies. From dogs, cattle and horses to wheat, potatoes and apples, she will discuss how “taming” these species has left its mark on them – and us.
Renowned elephant conservationist and wildlife television presenter Saba Douglas-Hamilton – known to millions for the Big Cat Diaries and This Wild Life series – will be in Cambridge on Friday, 24 November (7.30-9.30pm).
Saba will entertain with her exciting animal stories and tales of life in Kenya with her young family, which has brought her into close contact with some of the most fascinating and rare wildlife on the planet.
