Anglia Ruskin talk focuses on Labour’s future

Jon Cruddas MP will discuss “The Future of the Labour Party” at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge next Friday, 11 March (5.30pm-7pm).

The talk is part of The New Political Landscape series of public lectures, organised by Anglia Ruskin’s Labour History Research Unit, exploring the way in which British politics has changed since the 2015 General Election.

Cruddas is Labour MP for Dagenham and Rainham, and one of the foremost thinkers in the modern Labour Party.  He was policy co-ordinator under former leader Ed Miliband and has been associated with the centre-left grouping Compass, and with Blue Labour.

Rohan McWilliam, Professor of Modern British History at Anglia Ruskin, said: “Jon Cruddas is well known for his promotion of grass-roots political activism and for defeating the British National Party in his constituency.

“Few people have thought as deeply about modern Labour and new forms of politics.  This event promises to be an evening of rich political discussion as Labour faces new challenges and as the European Referendum sparks debates about the UK’s future.”

On Wednesday, 6 April (5pm-7pm) Dr Eunice Goes, Associate Professor of Politics at Richmond University, will discuss “The Labour Party Under Ed Miliband and the Elusive ‘Social Democratic Moment’”.

Dr Goes is the author of The Labour Party under Ed Miliband: Trying but Failing to Renew Social Democracy, which will be published by Manchester University Press next month, and is also a political journalist.  This lecture will reflect on the reasons for Labour’s failure in 2015 and what can be learned from this.

The New Political Landscape series of talks, which has already featured political scientist Tim Bale, economist Richard Murphy and former New Statesman editor Peter Wilby, is open to the public, and celebrates the launch of Anglia Ruskin’s new BA (Hons) Politics degree.

The talks on Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge campus are free to attend and please contact Professor Rohan McWilliam for further information rohan.mcwilliam@anglia.ac.uk
