Anglia Ruskin’s Bex Church wins ShortReel Award for film about her grandmother

A moving short film highlighting the impact of dementia has won this year’s ShortReel Award at the Cambridge Film Festival.

The film was produced by Bex Church, who is graduating next month from the BA (Hons) Film Studies course at Anglia Ruskin University.   Olive focuses on how dementia has affected Bex’s grandmother, and features a moving interview with Bex’s father.  The film was produced for the Independent Film Production module of the BA (Hons) Film Studies degree.   Bex explained: “Olive is a film very close to my heart.  Motivated by my nan’s diagnosis, I wanted to make a film demonstrating the effects someone having dementia has on the family as a whole.   “It was a way for me, and my dad who was closely involved in the process, to deal with our emotions head on.  I’m so overwhelmed and proud of the positive responses I’ve received, especially winning the ShortReel award!   “As the winner, Olive was screened at the Arts Picturehouse as part of the Cambridge Film Festival to an audience of 250 people – an honour and a privilege for any level of filmmaker.”   Dr Tina Kendall, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies, said: “Many congratulations to Bex.  The film is a moving portrait of Bex’s grandmother, which explores the impact of dementia on families.  It is an outstanding film and we couldn’t be more proud of her.”   ShortReel is a competition open to student filmmakers in eastern and central England.  In addition to having her film screened as part of the Cambridge Film Festival, Bex also received a £200 cash prize.  To watch the short film, click here.   *****
