Anglia Ruskin has been nominated in the 'Excellence in Student Sport Experience' category of the Colleges and Universities Business Officers (CUBO) awards, run in association with University Business magazine, which recognise excellence among senior managers in higher education.
Since Anglia Ruskin launched its first ever strategy for sport in 2012, annual attendance at its sporting activities has risen by 49,000 each year. Partnerships have been drawn up with community facilities and local clubs in Chelmsford, Cambridge, Peterborough and beyond, helping students compete in basketball, volleyball, hockey, swimming and athletics.
In the past year, on-campus gym memberships have increased by 22%, attendances at Anglia Ruskin’s Campus Sport activities, many of which are open to the public, are up 46% and more than 3,000 students engaged in some form of university sports activity.
Martin Beaver, Head of Sport and Active Anglia, said: “Sport is a vital part of the student experience. It helps foster a greater sense of belonging on campus and enables us to build links with local people and communities.
“The student sport experience at Anglia Ruskin is unrecognisable from four years ago and we are determined to keep improving. It is a great honour to have been nominated for this award and we’re looking forward to the ceremony.”
Anglia Ruskin is up against the University of Warwick and the University of Edinburgh. The winners will be announced on Thursday, 16 June during a ceremony at the University of Sussex. Previous winners of the title are the University of Aberdeen and Loughborough University.
