The memory walk, kindly sponsored by Gibbs Denley Insurance Services, is an unusual sight to behold and a special event to be part of, as hundreds don pyjamas or fancy dress to walk the 6.5 or 10 mile route from Shelford Rugby Club into and out of Cambridge’s historic town centre.
Since the event began in 2008, it has raised an incredible £255,063. The number of people walkers has increased each year, with four hundred and one taking part in in 2015 raising £39,444.91 The Charity are encouraging more participants to join them this May, and help raise much needed funds to vital the specialist palliative care and end of life delivered at the Mill Road hospice and throughout Cambridgeshire.
The theme for 2016’s Star Shine Stroll is ‘shine & sparkle’ and it is hoped that those registering will adopt this with the same enthusiasm which resulted in pink feather boas, fluffy punk bunny ears and luminous cow boy hats making their way across the Backs and around the historic town centre with torches, as dusk fell last year.
Event Coordinator Tasha Auburn adds: “Every year we are blown away by the unique and special atmosphere which surrounds this event from start to finish. We’re looking forward to seeing both familiar and new faces in 2016 and their ‘shine & sparkle’ outfits! Suggestions so far include glittery hats, sparkly deely-boppers and star shaped sun glasses, but just think ‘magpie’ and you’ll be on the right track!”
She adds: “If you would like to get involved but don’t fancy the walk, we are also looking for volunteers to help with safety and refreshments, so please just get in touch.”
Teams from Cambridgeshire’s business community – as well as more game men - are warmly invited to take part this year, joining the hundreds of women who join together to remember and celebrate someone they love.
All those who register to take part receive a registration pack with full details of the event and advice on raising sponsorship at time of booking and, a limited edition Star Shine Stroll 2016 t-shirt, a finisher’s medal and the all-important hot drink and bacon roll on the evening.
The registration fee for Star Shine Stroll is £15 and covers the cost of putting on the event, including goodies & refreshments, in order that all the funds raised through sponsorship can help us to reach the annual £2 million fundraising target which helps us to fund the care needed by in excess of 2000 patients and their loved ones each year.
