Birketts helps secure major investment in IVF clinic

Birketts has advised on a £3.5 million investment of the world’s first IVF clinic, Bourn Hall, to support its geographic expansion.

The investment, made by London based Mobeus Equity Partners, is to support further acquisitions and partnerships with other IVF providers, as well as the development of new fertility clinics.

Bourn Hall was founded in 1980 by Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe, the IVF pioneers whose work led to the birth of the first test-tube baby, Louise Brown, in 1978. Since its formation, Bourn Hall Clinic has been responsible for the birth of over 15,000 children.

Greg Blin, Investment Manager at Mobeus, said: “We are delighted to support an excellent team and to be involved with the Bourn Hall brand which has a strong reputation, built on its long heritage and expertise in the field of IVF. We believe the business represents a first class platform for growth in an attractive and expanding niche of the healthcare sector.”

Birketts advised Mobeus in all aspects of the investment process. Quentin Golder, Partner, commented: “This is the second deal we have acted on behalf of Mobeus and we are currently seeing a very buoyant private equity market.”

Bourn Hall is the largest independent fertility services provider in the East of England - it comprises three clinics in Cambridge, Colchester and Norwich, supported by a number of satellite units based in NHS hospitals and its own satellite unit in Wickford, Essex. The company is looking to continue expanding its geographic footprint, leveraging its strong and respected brand and reputation.

Last November, Mobeus Equity Partners backed a £15.9m management buy-out for Norwich-based Virgin Wines.
