This major loan exhibition includes Manet’s Portrait of Mademoiselle Claus and explores Manet’s influence on other artists, not only in their depiction of women, but also in the way he paved the way for professional female artists in the 20th century.
Focusing on the period from 1860 to 1914, the exhibition brings together 60 oils, paintings and drawings on loan from national collections and features examples by Claude Monet, John Singer Sargent, Philip Wilson Steer, Walter Sickert, Gwen John, William Orpen and Vanessa Bell.
Jonathan Agar, chief executive officer at Birketts commented: “As passionate supporters of the Norfolk community, Birketts is proud to support Norwich Castle and East Anglia Art Fund. With our roots in East Anglia stretching back to Edouard Manet’s lifetime we are delighted to sponsor Homage to Manet.”
The Homage to Manet exhibition at Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery will run from Saturday 31 January to Sunday 19 April and is complemented by an extensive programme of talks, special events, workshops, drama and children’s activities.
