Professor Michael Thorne and University Chaplain, Canon Nigel Cooper, hosted the Right Reverend Stephen Conway during the three-hour tour. During the visit, Bishop Stephen was given the chance to speak to students, staff and academics about the excellent research taking place at Anglia Ruskin.
The tour took in the Eye Clinic, the Jerome Booth Music Therapy Centre, the Vision and Eye Research Unit (VERU), the Children’s Book Illustration Show at the Ruskin Gallery, the Global Sustainability Institute (GSI), the Institute for International Management Practice (IIMP) and a visit to new facilities for research and teaching in Young Street, where Bishop Stephen was shown around the clinical skills labs.
Bishop Stephen said: “Prior contact with Anglia Ruskin led me to expect evidence of high standards of research, teaching and the student experience. My expectations were surpassed by the direct contact I had with academic staff and students.
“From vital research into glaucoma and global sustainability, through music therapy to the art of book illustration, I was delighted to applaud Anglia Ruskin for all its endeavour. It's equally concerned to advance scholarship, widen our sympathies and imagination and to serve the common good.”
Professor Thorne said: “Bishop Stephen has always been a supporter of the work we are doing at Anglia Ruskin University and mentioned us in his maiden speech in the House of Lords. We were honoured to be able to provide him with a closer look.
“Several areas of our research were recently classed as world-leading by the Research Excellence Framework and Bishop Stephen was very impressed not only by the work taking place, but the environment in which our students are learning. We look forward to welcoming him back in the future.”
