The Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills was in the city on Monday (18 March) to launch Cambridge Business Week and see first hand the great work of some of the city's leading technology companies, such as TWI, ARM and RealVNC.
Speaking at Botanic House, where he unveiled a plaque to mark the opening of the building before meeting a group of business leaders and politicians for lunch, Dr Cable described Cambridge as the “Silicon Valley of Britain”.
“There’s a unique combination here in Cambridge where you’ve got this great seat of learning producing incredibly talented people, including Nobel Prize winners, alongside the very best entrepreneurs and business minds. Not many places have this mix apart from Silicon Valley,” he said.
Ian Mather, Mills & Reeve partner and head of the Cambridge office, said: “It was certainly an upbeat lunch with the feeling that Government now realises it’s not just all about Tech City when it comes to leading technology companies in this country. It was also good for Dr Cable to be able to look out across the Cambridge skyline on a glorious sunny day and see for himself the transformation the city is currently undergoing with the likes of the CB1 and Parkside Place development.”
