The Commission was established by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority in 2020, and today publishes its initial findings on the climate risks facing the area and recommendations on how to tackle these risks.
Cambridge City Councillor Rosy Moore, Executive Councillor for Climate Change, Environment and City Centre, said “We welcome the Commission’s report which brings new data and expert analysis to our understanding of how climate change is affecting Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
“Cambridge City Council has been working to tackle climate change for many years, and our new strategy, also being published this week, will set out our proposals for intensifying our efforts in the years ahead.
“The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Commission’s report puts our work in a wider context, and shows how all the councils across the area, businesses and residents need to work together to achieve even more across issues such as transport, building, planning and energy.
“We look forward to working with our partners and our communities on this climate emergency, and to building a green recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.”
Officers from Cambridge City Council have supported the work of the Commission over the last year, providing practical examples and experience of what can be achieved, and where the most challenging hurdles may lie.
The city council’s own new climate change strategy is due to set out how the council will use the powers and resources it has to further reduce its own emissions and support businesses and residents to reduce theirs.
