Cambridge companies gear up for 2013 Karting Challenge

Local companies that get revved up by a bit of healthy competition are being encouraged to take part in the annual Friends of Addenbrooke’s Karting Challenge – an event that’s been held for the past six years and has raised more than £10,000 for good causes at the city’s hospital.

On Thursday 14 March, businesses from across Cambridge are invited to Caxton Karting Centre for an exciting night that combines networking and fundraising with the chance to take part in a two-hour endurance race. The event is being organised by the Friends of Addenbrooke’s – the volunteer fundraising arm of Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT).

Participating companies race teams of between two and eight people. Throughout the event, drivers swap regularly to keep up the pace. To make the competition more interesting, penalties – also known as donations – are applied for ‘assertive’ driving. Ultra competitive companies can also pay to put their opponents into a ‘sin bin’ if they feel they are slipping behind the field or just want to increase their lead.

Cheffins – winners of the 2012 Karting Challenge – has already put forward a team for the 2013 race and is confident about defending its title. Sue Bass, Financial Advisor at Cheffins, said: "This is a fabulous event for team building and a great opportunity to give something back to our local hospital. Last year, Cheffins employees were desperate to get behind the wheel so we signed up extra early to make sure we got a place. We look forward to defending our title against any business that thinks it’s fast enough to take us on.”

Money raised by the 2013 Karting Challenge will go to the Colorectal Unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Funds will help pay for saturation monitors that measure oxygen and the heart rate of patients transferred from the intensive treatment unit (ITU) to CT scanning and x-ray departments.

The event is open to novice and experienced karters, with advice dispensed on the night by Silverstone Circuit Trainers – who will be in attendance with some of their expert racing drivers. Caxton Kart Centre is also offering a buy one, get one free deal to participating companies that want to practice between now and the event.

Spaces are limited and are filling up fast so book now to avoid disappointment. Pre-booking is essential. Team places cost £400 and include a buffet and drinks for racers and spectators.  Book now by emailing the Friends of Addenbrooke’s via friends@addenbrookes.nhs.uk or call Jane Small on 07947322990 for more details.
