Exploring Dementia Through Film, organised by Alzheimer’s Research UK supporter and local filmmaker James Murray-White, will include a series of short films exploring the condition, as well as a panel discussion with dementia researchers from the University of Cambridge. The event on Saturday 19 October is backed by the UK’s leading dementia charity, which is based in Great Abington in Cambridgeshire.
James, who will curate the evening’s film programme, knows only too well the effects of dementia, as his mother Pauline was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease eight years ago. Films to be shown on the night include Keeping Mum, James’ own poignant documentary that began as a project to keep his mother’s memories alive, and Jamie and Vicki’s Story, a moving look at the lives of one couple affected by early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Audience members will also have the chance to learn more about the work of Alzheimer’s Research UK, and to put their questions to a panel of filmmakers and experts who are working on dementia.
James said:
“Dementia can be a difficult subject for many people, but film is a wonderful medium for tackling difficult subjects and can really help bring new understanding. Our programme for the evening will include a range of films that take a variety of different approaches to the topic, and I hope there will be something for everyone. I’m delighted that local dementia researchers will be there to respond to our films – their research has the potential to change the lives of people with the condition.”
Tim Parry, Head of Communications at Alzheimer’s Research UK said:
“Dementia affects more than 6,000 people in Cambridgeshire and is a subject that is more in the public eye than ever before, but there is still misunderstanding about the diseases that cause it. By mixing stories of real people with dementia, films that explore its effects and responses from researchers working on dementia, this event promises a unique insight into what it’s like to live with the condition. I would urge anyone with an interest in dementia to come along.”
Exploring Dementia Through Film takes place on Saturday 19 October from 7pm to 9.30pm at the Centre at St Paul’s in Hills Road, Cambridge. The event is free and refreshments will be provided. For more information, email k.marais@alzheimersresearchuk.org or call 01223 824569.
