Cambridge IVF, part of Cambridge University Hospitals, has signed a major contract with Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London and with commissioners in the East Midlands.
NHS patients can now benefit from accessing the first-class, all-round fertility treatment at the only NHS-run IVF facility in the East of England.
Although IVF is right for some couples it is only one of the fertility treatments, and comes almost at the end of the process when women are trying for a baby. Cambridge IVF is one of the few centres that can provide all other fertility services, including surgery for endometriosis and hormonal treatment, as well as IVF.
Since opening in 2011, Cambridge IVF has helped many couples to have the baby they’ve struggled so hard to conceive. The unit has world-class, quality-marked facilities and offers excellent continuity of care from conception through to birth.
Dr Alka Prakash, Cambridge IVF lead consultant, said: “We are really pleased that Cambridge IVF is now able to help more couples have children on the NHS. Infertility is a big issue, with around one in seven couples in the UK today trying to conceive.
“The partnership with Guy’s and St Thomas’ in London enables us to offer first-class NHS care in a state-of-the-art centre with no hidden charges.
“Cambridge IVF is part of Cambridge University Hospitals which includes the Rosie maternity hospital, a regional centre for women’s health. I and many of my colleagues work at Cambridge IVF and the Rosie so we are able to offer excellent, joined-up care.
“The link with Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital also means that we can help our patients with complex genetic problems in conceiving healthy babies by using specialised techniques. This enables people with an inheritable condition in their family to avoid passing it on to their children.
“The partnership of two academic units will lead to growth and development to achieve clinical excellence which is the centre of focus at CUH.
Parents welcomed the move and are pleased that Cambridge IVF can now treat more people on the NHS after their own positive experiences there.
One of the most recent arrivals is five-week old Harper. Mum Kelly Haston was delighted with the experience she had at Cambridge IVF.
Kelly, from Cottenham in Cambridgeshire, said: “Cambridge IVF focussed on giving us an informed choice to make the right decision which we really appreciated. The staff are caring and compassionate - they feel like family, and when we go back we are greeted with hugs and kisses.
“We are already recommending Cambridge IVF to our friends.”
