The challenges facing Dementia

Dementia is a much feared health condition for people over the age of 55. More than 21 million of us know a friend or family affected by the condition.

Recognising the growing challenges associated with dementia in an aging population, Cambridge law firm, Stone King, is demonstrating its support of the Alzheimer’s Society with staff members becoming Dementia Friends.

Dementia Friends, a community based programme, aims to change people’s perceptions of the condition by educating members of the community about the practical things that can be done to help people living with Dementia. It is about learning more about the illness and the small ways in which people can help sufferers.

Robert Meakin, Partner at Stone King, said: “We have Dementia Friends within our Trusts & Estates, Charity and Social Enterprise teams.  We even have one Dementia Championwho is trained and equipped with resources to answer people’s questions about the illness and suggest sources of further information and support.”

Dementia has recently attracted international attention with the G7 governments committing to finding a cure by 2025. Stone King believes that this intensified drive to find a cure is much needed, with the scale of the prediction that in the next year 850,000 people will be living with the condition.

Meakin added: “Through our day-to-day work, we have gained particular expertise in dealing sensitively with older people, their families and their carers, and members of our team have felt motivated to put these skills to practical use in the community.

“Within our work, the legal problems people often face can be complex for anyone and, where dementia sufferers and their families are concerned, require an approach of patience, sensitivity and tact, attributes we have plenty of within our team.”
