Chariots of Fire 2012 raises £32,000

In mid January Hewitsons hosted the 2012 Chariots of Fire cheque presentation, attended by representatives from both beneficiary charities - Cambridge Past, Present & Future (CPPF) and Cam Sight. In total £32,000 was raised during last year’s race, thanks to the efforts of nearly 1,900 runners from the 315+ teams that took part.

Proceeds from the 2012 race will further support CPPF in extending its award winning environmental education programme and contribute towards Cam Sight in building a flagship technology centre in Cambridge for blind and partially sighted people.

The cheque was presented by the race’s honorary president, Sir Michael Marshall; Charles Hewitson, senior partner at Hewitsons and organisers of the charity race; Chris Elliott, reporter of the Cambridge News and the race’s media partner, and was received by Donald Douglas, Vice Chairman, CPPF and Anne Streather, Cam Sight Chief Executive.

Donald Douglas, Vice Chairman of Cambridge Past, Present & Future, who also ran in the race said: “We are very grateful to everyone who took part in Chariots this year and raised sponsorship. Every penny we receive will be spent on our efforts to  open up our award-winning education programme to more people who are less able, disadvantaged children and individuals with learning difficulties. We also want to thank all our wonderful volunteers for their help on the day.”

Anne Streather, Cam Sight Chief Executive, says: “We are delighted to receive the money towards our Technology Centre appeal and I would like to thank everyone involved. Your support will play a vital part in ensuring that every person in the county with sight loss can use technology to help regain independence.”

Charles Hewitson, who ran for the 21st consecutive year said: “As always, I am very pleased that Hewitsons Charitable Trust, which organises Chariots of Fire, has continued to raise much needed funds for these two extremely worthwhile charities.  Once again everyone, including local firms, public sector organisations and the Cambridge Colleges have fully embraced the event which is great, I’m already looking forward to this year’s race.”

This year’s race will be held on Sunday 22nd September 2013 and will be officially launched in May.
