Chinese officials visit Cambridge for disaster brief

Anglia Ruskin University will be showcasing its expertise in major incident planning this week with a high-profile symposium in Cambridge for senior Chinese regional government officials.

The symposium, which runs from 19-22 September, will feature planning for disasters such as earthquakes, major disease outbreaks, and terrorist attacks.

Government officials from the Jiangsu province of China will hear from Julian Constable, who leads the Resilience and Emergency Management module on Anglia Ruskin’s Public Services degree, as well as senior UK emergency planners from the NHS, the military, and Cambridge Police and Fire Service.

Anglia Ruskin University is the leading university in the region for resilience and the ‘blue light’ emergency services.  The Public Service course was the first of its kind in the UK when it was introduced in 2002 and Anglia Ruskin launched the Policing Institute for the Eastern Region earlier this year.

The Chinese delegates will learn how government and emergency services in the UK prepare for and react to natural disasters; how they deal with traffic safety and public areas; and how they plan for potential terrorist incidents and other major events affecting public safety.

Symposium chair Emma Brett, Senior Lecturer in Public Service and Policing at Anglia Ruskin University, said: “We’re pleased to be showcasing our strength in depth in the areas of emergency planning, resilience and disaster management – and in particular our close links with the police, the fire service and the other emergency services.

“This event will cement our growing links with China and showcase our role in professional development in the public services.”

The symposium has been arranged through the Cambridge Chinese Community Centre, which has close links with Anglia Ruskin University.
