Clinic provides £32,000 of free legal advice

An initiative that provides free face-to-face legal advice to people in need has provided more than £32,000 worth of guidance in its first nine months of operation.

The Anglia Law School Law Clinic was founded in 2018 in Cambridge and Chelmsford, and offers 30-minute face-to-face sessions of independent and confidential legal advice on matters such as relationship breakdown, separation or divorce, child arrangements and employment law issues such as unfair dismissal.

The clinic is a partnership between local law firms and Anglia Ruskin University, with 54 Law students also volunteering to assist and help increase their own experience of legal issues.

In its first nine months of operation, the clinic has offered 164 hours of free advice from lawyers, which is worth £32,800 based on a typical rate of £200 per hour.

A total of 378 clients have been seen across both sites, with many referrals coming from local organisations such as Citizens Advice Bureau, Women’s Aid and children’s centres.

Sarah Calder, Director of the Law Clinic, said: “Our first nine months has been a great success, and we could not have done this without the enthusiastic support of our local communities. We have had lots of positive feedback and there have been many positive comments about the professionalism and engagement of our student advisors.

“The continued support from local lawyers is extremely gratifying and has been central to the success of the Law Clinic. I look forward to building on our existing relationships and developing new ones.”
