Organised by Anglia Ruskin’s Labour History Research Unit, the talks cover different aspects of British politics following Jeremy Corbyn’s resounding victory in the Labour leadership election.
Professor Tim Bale kicks off the series with ‘The Report of my Death was an Exaggeration: Party Membership in 21st Century Britain’ on Wednesday, 18 November (6pm).
Professor Bale is one of Britain’s leading experts on modern politics and the author of The Conservative Party: From Thatcher to Cameron (2010) and Five Year Mission: The Labour Party Under Ed Miliband (2015).
On Wednesday, 25 November (6pm), economist Professor Richard Murphy will talk about ‘Corbynomics and the Joy of Tax’.
Professor Murphy, who is credited with shaping Corbyn’s economic strategy, also advises trade unions on tax policy. He is the author of The Joy of Tax (2015) and a founder of the Tax Justice Network.
And on Wednesday, 2 December (5.30pm), Peter Wilby will discuss ‘Jeremy Corbyn: Labour’s Saviour or Nemesis?’ Wilby, one of Britain’s leading political journalists and commentators, is a former Editor of the Independent on Sunday and the New Statesman.
Rohan McWilliam, Professor of Modern British History at Anglia Ruskin and Director of the Labour History Research Unit, said: “In the past six months David Cameron has won a General Election unexpectedly and Jeremy Corbyn has been elected as Labour leader even more unexpectedly.
“So have we now entered an age defined by a new kind of politics or do both political figures offer more of the same? Has politics been changed by the 2008 Crash? Are there alternatives to austerity and neo-Liberalism? Can politics be made meaningful to a disillusioned younger generation?
“The Labour History Research Unit at Anglia Ruskin is inviting a range of leading political commentators to explore this new landscape in a lecture series which also celebrates the launch of the BA (Hons) Politics degree at Anglia Ruskin.”
All talks will take place in the Lord Ashcroft Building on Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge campus, are free to attend, and no booking is required. For further information, please contact Professor Rohan McWilliam (rohan.mcwilliam@anglia.ac.uk).
