The new policy aims to provide families with a measure of support at a very difficult time, particularly those who may otherwise struggle to pay for the kind of service they would want for their loved one.
The move to provide funerals free of charge for under-16s has been supported by local funeral directors, who work closely with the council’s Bereavement Services team.
Cllr Anna Smith, Executive Councillor for Streets and Open Spaces, said: “The death of a child or young person is a terrible thing for any family.
“We believe that no grieving family should be burdened by the additional worry about how they will pay for their child’s funeral.
“Making our services free for the loved ones of under-16s is something that we can do to ease one burden at this tragic time.”
The council offers a range of options for burial, cremation and commemoration of loved ones. Staff from the council’s Bereavement Services team are on hand to offer advice and help with making funeral arrangements and structuring a unique and fitting funeral service.
