E-Luminate Festival shines light on Cambridge technology and landmarks

Later this month (20-24 February), Cambridge city centre will be lit up with a series of displays in a unique collaboration between CleanTech innovators and artists working with Light.

A programme of lectures, workshops and after-dark displays will showcase some of the most innovative new technologies to emerge from Cambridge’s vibrant CleanTech sector, presenting a fantastic opportunity for members of the public to explore these in a fun and informative way. While the organisers will not divulge all details of what each installation will look like, they assure that members of the public should be prepared for something quite surprising.

In an exciting new development, the award-winning projection artist, Ross Ashton has been appointed Artistic Director for the festival. "I am delighted to be involved with the e-Luminate Cambridge Festival. I am sure that its focus on cutting edge art and technology will be a source of inspiration to all who see it."  Many will recall having seen Ashton’s work lighting up the façade of the Senate House to mark Cambridge University's 800th  anniversary. His unique perspective brings a great deal of visual excitement to the e-Luminate Festival.

This unique exhibition will centre on some of Cambridge’s landmark buildings and include illuminations at Senate House, Great St Mary’s Church and The Grand Arcade among others.

Paul Hammans, the Operations Manager of Great St Mary’s Church, says: “We are so pleased to be involved in this project.  Not only does it capture our interest in sustainability but to allow the Church to be shown in a unique way is very fitting, especially coming just days before it is shut for major renovation work to make the Church more energy-efficient and accessible.”

Great St Mary’s is working in collaboration with lighting designer David Mack and specialist lighting control company amBX.  Transforming large-scale architecture with light is their speciality and the church is an exceptional showpiece for this type of creativity.

Clean Technology and award-winning artists make for an interesting marriage of skills and ideas and the festival brings an educational element with collaborations with the new Cambridge Science Centre and Changing Spaces.

Festival Director, Alessandra Caggiano says, “While we are starting in a small way, we aspire  to growing the festival year on year to rival other well established  light festivals thanks to our innovative idea to use the latest products in clean technology lighting.” The organisers say that this first edition of the festival has generated a great deal of interest, not just from sustainability innovators but artists, volunteers and the community at large.
