The production is a unique opportunity to hear the voices of female prisoners. Based on real-life experiences, Key Change tells the hard-hitting story of two women who meet in prison.
After playing to sell-out audiences at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe, where it won the prestigious Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award, and enjoying a three-week Off-Broadway run in New York earlier this year, the critically-acclaimed production will visit Anglia Ruskin University’s Mumford Theatre on Wednesday, 9 November (7.30pm).
The play received a New York Times Critics’ Pick during its Off-Broadway run, with the paper describing it as “a moving, intimate and superbly acted drama”. The Stage gave it a five-star review, while The Guardian called it “exquisite”.
And in addition to wowing theatre audiences and critics, Key Change has been performed in high-security prisons on both sides of the Atlantic.
It was also staged last week at the Houses of Parliament, in partnership with the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance, Clinks and the Prison Reform Trust.
Catrina McHugh, writer and artistic director of the Open Clasp theatre company, said: “The response to Key Change, both at the Fringe and internationally, and in the prisons we’ve visited, has been overwhelming but the success of this project is down to the collaboration with women from Low Newton prison so I thank each and every woman who put their trust in us to tell their stories.”
Tickets cost £12.50 (£10 concessions, £8.50 students and children) and can be booked by calling the Mumford Theatre box office on 01223 352932 or visiting www.anglia.ac.uk/mumford
