Education and science: Lord Baker to deliver Cambridge keynote talk

Lord Kenneth Baker will visit Cambridge this week to talk about the importance of businesses and the education sector working together to address skills and labour shortages in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) field.

Lord Baker, a former Secretary of State for Education and Science under Margaret Thatcher, will speak at Anglia Ruskin University’s Lord Ashcroft International Business School on Wednesday ( 20 January).

He was a Conservative MP from 1968 to 1997 and held a number of senior positions in Government, including Home Secretary and Britain’s first Minister for Information Technology.

As Secretary of State for Education and Science he was responsible for introducing the National Curriculum, tests and league tables, Grant Maintained Schools, City Technology Colleges, and Student Loans.

Lord Baker remains influential in the world of education and has been a driving force behind the establishment of University Technical Colleges.

Dr Terri Simpkin, Head of the Department of Leadership and Management in the Lord Ashcroft International Business School, said:  “Skills and labour shortages in STEM occupations means there is a need to be innovative, and this applies to managerial and leadership aspects.

“Close collaboration between industry and the education sector is absolutely key to meet the pressing issues of employability, productivity and risk mitigation in organisations today.”

Lord Baker’s talk, to students on the MA Data Centre Leadership and Management course, is also open to members of the public.  It runs from 10.30-11.30am and includes a Q&A session.
