Employing reservists: do you know the drill?

Legal changes concerning the employment of Reservists came into force yesterday (1 October).

Every day the media encourages men and women to support the armed services as a Reservist. Consequently, over 1,000 employers currently have an HR policy in place and more than 700 have released employees for active service or "mobilisation". These numbers are set to increase as the campaign to recruit more Reservists continues. Employers may be surprised to learn how advantageous Reservists can be to the workforce.

Birketts is delighted to be working with SaBRE (Supporting Britain's Reservists and Employers) to encourage businesses to consider the role of the Reservist and become a supportive employer, of which there are already 1,693 in the country. "Employers will be surprised at how straight forward and well supported they would be", explains Catherine Johnson, employment partner at Birketts. "For example, for every month that a member of staff is away on active service, the company is paid up to £500 and these individuals bring their training and skills, particularly in relation to leadership, motivation and loyalty, back to the work place."

Employers are invited to attend a free breakfast seminar at Trinity Park, Ipswich on Thursday 12 November 2014. Delegates will hear from Col (Retd) Antony Fairbanks-Weston, chairman Suffolk Employer Engagement Group as well as local businessman and Reservists who will give first-hand accounts of their experiences.
