Ex-Navy officer’s 'Leadership' book wins plaudits

A book on leadership – written by Dr Kevin Roe, a former Royal Navy officer who is now Senior Lecturer in Human Resource Management at Anglia Ruskin University – has been shortlisted for a prestigious academic award.

Leadership is in the running to win the Management and Leadership Textbook category at the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Book of the Year Awards.

The awards, held in association with the British Library, celebrate books that have “the potential to transform the effectiveness of working managers or equip students for future management roles”.

Leadership, published by Oxford University Press, is one of 24 books to be shortlisted across five categories.  The overall winner will be named CMI Management Book of the Year, which comes with a £5,000 cash prize.

Dr Roe, who served aboard the Royal Navy frigate HMS Brilliant before being employed as Middle East Business Manager for Perkins Engines, said: “Leadership is an everyday occurrence and yet still puzzles many.

“I hope my book will help to debunk some of the myths surrounding leaders and give individuals the confidence to believe they can lead too.”

Commenting on Dr Roe’s book, the judges said: “This accessible and comprehensive textbook is designed specifically to develop students’ understanding of leadership in a variety of contexts.

“Drawing upon the author’s extensive practical and academic experience, the book illustrates leadership in action using a wealth of international case studies.  Examples have been carefully selected to highlight the practical application of leadership theory, both in a formal business context and in everyday life.

“The author’s lively writing style, combined with real-world case studies and supportive learning tools, makes this book essential reading for all pre-experience students wanting to understand more about how leadership ideas emerged, and the relevance of leadership to the world around them.”
