Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust says anyone can attend its next Medicine for Members address, which will be delivered in lay terms so it will be of use to anyone with a personal or professional interest.
The event will take place between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on Wednesday 15 May in the William Harvey Lecture Theatre in the School of Clinical Medicine. It is diagonally opposite Addenbrooke’s Hospital reception entrance, and a stone’s throw from the multi-storey car park.
It will be addressed by Professor Peter St George-Hyslop, who is a medical scientist, neurologist and molecular geneticist who is known for his research into neurodegenerative diseases. His team focuses on understanding the causes and molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and fronto-temporal dementia.
Also speaking will be CUH consultant neurologist James Rowe,wh who leads who is professor of cognitive neurology and director of the Centre for Fronto-temporal Dementia. His team are piecing together how molecular changes in the brain lead to poor memory and challenging behaviour in patients, and how this knowledge can directly lead to new approaches to treating and preventing dementia.
They will be joined by John O’Brien who is a professor of old age psychiatry at the University of Cambridge and a clinician. He has research interests in biomarkers and brain imaging in dementia, Lewy body dementia and clinical trials. He was a member of the 2018 National Institute for Health and Care Excellence dementia guideline group and was awarded the 2018 Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Lifetime Achievement Award in Older Peoples Mental Health
Professor St George-Hyslop will talk about the causes of dementia; professor Rowewh who leads will discuss diagnosis and what experimental treatments are in the pipeline and professor O’Brien will cover managing behavioural symptoms.
