Explore Indie Cambridge - Nanna Mexico

With the help of Indie Cambridge - the community of ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, people, businesses, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Nanna Mexico.

In the heart of one of Cambridge’s busiest shopping streets, you’ll find a little piece of Mexico, drawing you in with its aroma of spicy chipotle sauce and succulent slow-cooked pork.

Nanna Mexico on Petty Cury is a feast for the senses as candy pink frozen margaritas churn invitingly alongside authentic street food (tender braised lamb, homemade chorizo), freshly prepared to be stuffed into ‘Big-Ass burritos’, rolled into enchiladas or popped into salads.

Though its street food is de rigueur with millennials, Nanna Mexico’s story is deeply rooted in the past, with owner Luis Navarro’s beloved Nanna Margarita. Living in a tough neighbourhood of Mexico City in 1958, with seven children, Margarita began selling enchiladas to the community. Her fare was a hit – and Margarita passed down her recipes and enterprising spirit to her grandson.

So, in 2005, lawyer Luis and wife Ruth moved to Cambridge, launching their first food trailer. Abiding by Margarita’s motto – ‘buy fresh, cook simple, waste nothing’ – the delicious dishes took the city by storm. Today the business boasts 40 staff, with Cambridge premises in Regent Street, Petty Cury and Fitzroy Street, a restaurant in Norwich, and a fleet of food trailers, catering for outside events. Nanna would be proud!
