February is LGBT+ History Month - Don't miss out on key events in Cambridge

LGBT History Month, which takes place in February in the UK, is a month-long celebration of diversity and observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history.

In the UK, LGBT History Month began in 2005 with DfES backing for two years to support its key aims of teaching young people the history of gay rights. The UK’s LGBT HM is now part of an international initiative to provide role models, build community, represent civil rights and recognise the contributions of the LGBT community.

Cambridge Queer Valentine’s is now an established fixture on the LGBT History Month calendar in Cambridge. This joyous night of comedy, dance and music will take place on Thursday 13 February 2020 @Cambridge Junction.

Cambridge Queer Valentine’s is also the annual fundraiser for The Kite Trust, Cambridgeshire’s only charity for LGBT+ young people. It has a fantastic line-up:

‘Super-camp, aggressively flirtatious – and absolutely all over the shop’ comedian Kuan-Wen Huang. Hailing from the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage, Huang says he left his beloved island to escape from his elitist tiger mum. He trained as a journalist but accidentally became a tax accountant in the UK.

Singer-songwriter CN Lester, a trained mezzo-soprano, curated the Barbican's Transpose Festival and wrote ‘Trans like me’ (Virago) ‘one of the three essential works on trans issues’ (The New York Times).

Celebrated acrobat JD is creating a new piece for CQV. The evening opens with a specially choreographed dance by Cambridge’s Bodywork Studio.

Ten-part jazz funk band Colonel Spanky’s Love Ensemble (pictured) will close with their high energy cover performances that span genres as diverse as pop, rap, jazz, funk and ska

‘Spank my Colonel's lovely ensemble, you were amazing!’ (Business Leaders Network, Cambridge Pride 2019).

LGBT History Month has become, in recent years, a celebration of queerness and a challenge to heteronormative attitudes. Cambridge Queer Valentine’s offers an ideal way to express this.
