Free workshops and talks about subjects from dolls houses to fictional languages will take place during this year’s Cambridge Festival of Ideas.
Anglia Ruskin University sponsors the festival, organised by the University of Cambridge, and will host 15 events aimed at a variety of ages from 20 October until 2 November, most of which are free of charge.
Several of Anglia Ruskin’s renowned academics will be involved in the Festival. Dr Sean Lang, Senior Lecturer in History, has written a play entitled Assassination Before Lunch which will be performed at the Mumford Theatre on Wednesday, 29 October and Thursday, 30 October.
An interactive talk called Negotiating identities: Cultural encounters of Bend it like Beckham will be hosted by Professor Guido Rings on Wednesday, 22 October from 7pm until 9pm at Anglia Ruskin’s East Road campus.
Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, will present Mother Tongue Other Tongue on Monday, 20 October from 6pm until 8pm at East Road. This event will see stars of the Routes into Languages East Mother Tongue Other Tongue competition 2014, for secondary school students, perform and display their shortlisted entries. Mother Tongue encourages children who do not have English as a first language or who speak a different language at home to share a lullaby, poem or song from their mother tongue. Other Tongue encourages children learning another language to use that language creatively by writing a poem in that other tongue.
Senior Lecturer in Psychology, Dr Jane Aspell, will explore the subject of self-identity during a talk on Friday, 31 October from 4pm until 5pm, also at East Road.
Other events range from a Dolls House Exhibition (20-25 October) to live music.
