The 21-strong ‘class of 2018’ were welcomed by director of workforce, David Wherrett, and chief nurse, Ann-Marie Ingle, before gathering on the clinical school staircase for a photograph.
CUH is one of the first trusts to adopt a new nurse graduate apprenticeship scheme, meaning students can earn while they learn.
They will get paid £15,404 a year, have tuition fees paid by the Trust – leading to a BSc (Hons) Nursing Degree – and work in a world-famous hospital while sampling student life at Anglia Ruskin University during day release.
The first intake consists of Healthcare Support Workers and Theatre Support Staff who already work at CUH and have more than 72 years’ experience between them. Future cohorts, totalling100 apprentices each year, will draw on candidates from outside the trust too.
David told the group: “Today Ann-Marie and I want to say how proud we are that you are on the nursing apprenticeship programme and reiterate how essential you are to the Trust’s success. We are delighted to support your journey to become a registered nurse and work with us in that role”
Ann-Marie added: “This pathway has been designed to provide a balance of practical nursing skills and academic knowledge to enable you to provide quality care to our patients. This exciting programme will support our Registered Nurse recruitment and contribute to our highly skilled clinical workforce at CUH.”
Professor Ruth Taylor, Dean of the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education, at Anglia Ruskin University, said they too were looking forward to welcoming the students.
She added: “Anglia Ruskin is one of only a handful of higher education providers offering degree apprenticeships in nursing, having started in September 2017, and this group has lots to look forward to. The apprenticeship provides a valuable combination of university tuition combined with hands on hospital experience.”
