Free events mark Black History Month

Anglia Ruskin University will mark Black History Month by hosting two free events on its Cambridge campus this weekend (Saturday 24 October).

From 1pm-3pm, A Charmed Life will portray the life and times of Jamaican airman Eddie Martin Noble, whose life had a major impact on Andrea Levy’s classic, Small Island.

Directed by Ros Gihan Williams and Patrick Vernon OBA, A Charmed Life examines issues around colonisation of the Caribbean, racism in the RAF during the Second World War, the colour bar and racial inequality in post-war Britain. This event is being organised by the Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum. For further details, call 01223 655241.

This is followed at 5pm by a performance by Realitie, aka Josephine Rollins, a poet who focuses on youth issues, domestic violence, identity, sexual health, drugs, mental health and more. This event is being put on in partnership with Cambridge City Council. For more information, call 01223 457876.

There is no need to pre-book for either event. Miriam Berg, Community Engagement Officer at Anglia Ruskin University, said: “Anglia Ruskin is delighted to be hosting these thought-provoking performances to mark Black History Month. Both events will explore important historical issues that have helped shape modern Britain and we hope to see as many people on campus as possible.”

There are several other events happening around Cambridge to celebrate Black History Month. Details can be found at http://www.cambridge.gov.uk/black-history-month
