The Results Day service, primarily targeted at disadvantaged pupils in schools across the region, will see student volunteers support pupils during the process of UCAS Clearing and ‘Adjustment’ on A-Level results day.
As well as improving access to higher education for pupils from under-represented groups, these pupils will also have the opportunity to work with a mentor who will guide them through their first six months of university life.
Marc Rothera, Senior Outreach Officer at Anglia Ruskin University, said: “We initially got involved with MyBigCareer when we worked together on a day of activity with pupils in a Cambridge school.
“It very quickly became clear that we had a shared sense of purpose around supporting young people to make well-informed decisions and help even the most disadvantaged to understand that university could be a realistic opportunity for them.
“After that we then got involved in supporting the Results Day service in schools in Hackney last August. It was such a positive experience for us and we’re thrilled to now be able to bring the service to schools and colleges in our region.”
Deborah Streatfield, founder of MyBigCareer, said: “All at MyBigCareer are pleased that UPP are supporting our highly successful Results Day project. It is imperative that young students are given the support and guidance early on the day and we are grateful to Anglia Ruskin University for their help and direction over the last few months.”
Dr Paul Marshall, Chair of the Board of Trustees at the UPP Foundation, said: “This project strives to increase access and retention through assisting students whose access is prohibited by their socioeconomic background or knowledge poverty. This causes a lack of understanding of Higher Education and other career pathways which we and MyBigCareer, in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University, endeavour to break down.”
The Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable, patron of MyBigCareer, said: “MyBigCareer is doing valuable work providing careers advice and guidance in schools and communities which are badly served at present, helping to raise aspirations and improve outcomes. I am delighted that this partnership will be able to take its work to a higher level.”
