Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) is teaming up with the National Saturday Club scheme to deliver an exciting programme of free creative workshops for Year 10 and Year 11 students living in and around Cambridge.

ARU’s Cambridge School of Art will once again be running an Art & Design Saturday Club, while the Cambridge School of Creative Industries will be offering a new Film & Media Saturday Club, supported by the British Film Institute (BFI).

The National Saturday Club is a UK-wide network, supported by Arts Council England and the Department for Education, which each year provides 1,500 young people with the opportunity to study the subjects they love, for free!

Co-ordinated by expert academics, both of ARU’s 20-week programmes begin in January 2022 and are open to students of all abilities.  Each programme is designed to build skills and confidence whilst providing participants with an insight into university-level study and the potential career paths beyond this.

The Art & Design programme will be run in the style of a foundation course, made up of blocks of specialisms taken from the subjects taught at the Cambridge School of Art, including drawing, printmaking, graphic design, fashion design, interior design, animation, photography, and fine art.  The workshops will be run by ARU students, while masterclasses will be delivered by industry leaders.

The Film & Media Saturday Club, supported by the BFI, will see participants explore everything from production, editing and sound design to VFX, scripting, and animation.  In addition to talks by industry figures, club members will learn practical and technical skills spanning filming, editing, sound, and lighting, as well as develop key transferable skills such as problem-solving and collaboration.

The clubs will also provide students with the opportunity to visit museums and art galleries, attend national masterclasses, and display their work in an exhibition at Somerset House in London.

The ARU Saturday Clubs will run from Saturday 8 January 2022 until Saturday 18 May 2022.  Places are limited to 30 participants per club and applications close on Sunday 12 December.

Students must be able to commit to the full 20 weeks and are welcome to apply for both clubs, but if successful would only be awarded a place on one of the clubs.  To apply, visit https://saturday-club.org/join-a-club and for further information, please email schoolsandcolleges@aru.ac.uk
