Graduate Dan lands V&A Illustration prize

Recent Anglia Ruskin University graduate Dan Ungureanu has won £1,000 in an illustration competition organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum, the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design.

Dan, who graduated in January from the MA in Children’s Book Illustration course, was runner-up in the Student Illustrator of the Year category at the V&A Illustration Awards 2015.

His work, Nara and the Island, began as a student project and tells the story of young Nara, who is eager to escape her island home and discover a nearby island.

Nara and the Island, which is illustrated in pencil drawings and digitally coloured, will be published by Andersen Press in 2016.

Illustrator Yasmeen Ismail, one of the judges of the prize, said: “Ungureanu’s composition is spot on, the colours are beautiful and the whole piece evokes a childlike curiosity.  Gorgeous colour and use of scale.”

Established in 1972, previous winners of the V&A Illustration Awards include Posy Simmonds, Raymond Briggs and Ralph Steadman.

This year’s competition attracted over 800 submissions and a free exhibition of original artwork by Dan and the other winners can be seen outside the V&A’s National Art Library until 2 August.
