Green Flag waving at the top of the Gogs! Wandlebury Country Park is one of the best

Keep Britain Tidy announces a record-breaking number of award-winning parks and green spaces for 2013. Wandlebury Country Park is one of the very best in the UK – and that’s official.

The Park is among a record-breaking 1,447 parks and green spaces that will receive a prestigious Green Flag Award.

The national award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag  is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

This Award recognises and highlights that people in the Cambridge area are benefitting from a green space of high quality.

Wandlebury, situated on the gentle Gog Magog Hills just south of Cambridge, is a welcome retreat for walkers and nature lovers. CambridgePPF – the charity who owns the Park - has improved it during the last 60 years for our visitors and wildlife.

Carolin Göhler, CEO of CambridgePPF, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the first time. Green Flag status is highly sought after and recognises the good standards of site management and visitor experience, which the charity strives to achieve at the country park.

“CambridgePPF’s staff and volunteers have worked really hard to meet the criteria including preparing a new management plan to look after the much-loved park and planning improvements. Smart new finger sign posts have been installed by the Ranger Team to help new visitors find their way around the site. We are not resting on our laurels – there is more we want to achieve:

"We invite everyone to support our current Wandlebury Appeal which includes improving the wildlife pond at the heart of the estate  and creating better BBQ facilities for visitors to enjoy.

“ Join us for a Green Flag Celebration Tea Party today Tuesday 30 July at 4.30pm at the heart of Wandlebury – Inner Ring – come and join us for a free tea and meet staff and volunteers of the Park. Icicle Tricycle Ice Cream stall will also be there for those wishing to purchase cooler refreshments!"

The record number of awards across the country means more people than ever before will have access to well-managed, quality green space, which is vital to people’s health and wellbeing.

Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “We are thrilled to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces.

“A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the hard work and dedication of all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who have helped to create these fantastic places for all to enjoy.

“Quality green spaces are absolutely essential to happy, healthy communities. They are fundamental to our quality of life, whether in cities, towns or villages. That is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”
